- Hiring and paying the freight forwarder
- Arranging and paying for ocean freight
- Purchasing cargo insurance
- Managing customs clearance at the destination
FOB can work well if you have an established logistics team and negotiate freight rates in volume. But for many importers — especially those buying from a new supplier or entering a new market — it adds complexity and hidden costs.
What Does CIF Mean?
CIF stands for Cost, Insurance, and Freight. Under CIF terms, the supplier handles and pays for:
- Ocean freight from origin port to your destination port
- Cargo insurance for the shipment
- All export documentation
You receive the goods at your port. Your responsibility begins at the destination — customs clearance and inland delivery are typically yours to arrange, but the sea journey is fully covered.

For buyers in Europe, the United States, Africa, and the Middle East, CIF is often the more practical choice — especially when:
- You are working with a supplier for the first time
- You don’t have a preferred freight forwarder on the Turkey corridor
- You want a single, predictable landed cost per shipment
